A Leader’s Training for Responding to Workplace Threats, Safety, and Employee Support

Presented by Dr. John Brown from UCSF’s Threat Management Team, this training will provide leaders (supervisors, managers, directors, and above) with practical guidance and resources for responding when their team members are impacted by potential or actual incidents of workplace violence or threats of violence. Leaders will learn about applicable UCSF resources, protocols, and points of contact for managing a range of concerning situations involving their employees, including threats of violence, domestic violence concerns, stalking, and suicidal statements or other indications of potential self-harm. Emphasis will be placed on helping leaders understand their role, respond appropriately and safely, and engage the appropriate UCSF resources when situations require additional assessment, intervention, or support. Additional focus will be given to: • Recognizing common stress reactions in team members • Communicating effectively and compassionately in a crisis • Promoting a sense of safety and stability • Connecting employees with appropriate support Responding effectively in a moment of crisis can provide a team with increased safety, stability, and confidence. This allows for more resiliency in the aftermath of a critical incident supporting recovery and team cohesion. BIO: Dr. Brown serves as UCSF’s Threat Management Team Lead, in addition to his role as a licensed Clinical Psychologist with the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program and his private practice. He earned his master’s and doctoral degrees in Clinical Psychology from The Wright Institute in Berkeley, following a bachelor’s degree in History from Portland State University. Throughout his career, Dr. Brown has contributed to the field of psychological care in a variety of settings, including as a clinical psychologist with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, where he specialized in caring for patients experiencing acute psychological distress. He joined UCSF’s Threat Management Team in 2016 and assumed the role of team lead in 2022. His combination of clinical expertise, academic training, and experience in threat management reflects his commitment to supporting the psychological well-being and safety of the UCSF community.
