Trauma can shape patients’ experiences of healthcare and contribute to challenging clinical encounters. This Grand Rounds explores a trauma-informed approach to recognizing and responding to these situations, covering the prevalence and impact of trauma on patient behavior and communication. The session will introduce practical de-escalation skills and trauma-informed strategies to help clinicians navigate difficult interactions while fostering safety, trust, and effective communication with their patients. Speakers: Sarah Apgar, MD, is a professor of medicine in the UCSF Division of Hospital Medicine at UCSF Health, medical director of the Code CARE Program at UCSF Health, and medical director of the GMS hospital medicine service at UCSF Parnassus. Her work focuses on trauma-informed care and the care of hospitalized patients with complex medical and psychosocial needs. Samira Lopez, RN, BSN, is a psychiatric nurse, director of the Code CARE Program at UCSF Health, and the program director for the inpatient behavioral health units at UCSF Stanyan and Hyde hospitals.
