Caloyeras Center for Modern Greek Studies at LMU and the Kypseli Greek Dance Center SUNDAYS 5-7pm | October 11, October 18, October 25, November 1, and November 8 SPACE IS LIMITED, REGISTER HERE Inspired by the overwhelming community response to last year's dance events, we are excited to announce that the Center has partnered with Kypseli Greek Dance Center to bring back a dance class in commemoration of Athan Karras, who for many years was a beloved dance instructor and cherished presence at the Caloyeras Center. Over five sessions, dancers of all levels — from complete beginners to seasoned veterans — will learn traditional steps from across the Greek regions, guided by Dimitris Buterakos. Dimitris has been Greek dancing for two decades and has been teaching for over 10 years. He has attended seminars and classes all over Greece, as well as in Toronto and Montreal. The series will conclude with a glendi open to the community. Come watch a performance by participants, dance yourself if the spirit moves you, and share in traditional Greek food and music as we honor Athan's legacy. Kypseli is a neighborhood in Athens, Greece, and is also the Greek word for beehive. The Kypseli Greek Dance Center operates as a volunteer club of enthusiastic followers of traditional Greek folk music and dance passionate about providing opportunities to dance together and enjoy many types of Greece's unique music. It was formed after the Intersection, a folk dance club in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles run by Athan Karras and Rudy Dannes, closed its doors in 1985. The Intersection was a memorable place where many of us were first introduced to Greek dancing. It began in a small living space on Alvarado St. run by Louise (Anderson) Bilman. Today Kypseli hosts special live music and D.J. dance events on a regular basis and brings both local talent as well as musicians and master teachers from Greece. It sponsors musicians who play a wide variety of specialized Greek repertoires, including rebetiko, laiko, Pontiaka, Nisiotiko, Epirotiko and more.
