Artist: Muddling Through: Radical Moral Disagreements—Case Studies from Latin America

Martin Maldonado, Ph.D from Cordoba, Argentina, will introduce the Radical Moral Disagreements project, an emerging Oxford University initiative exploring how societies navigate deep, seemingly irreconcilable conflicts over values. Drawing on Latin American case studies of Indigenous communities displaced by development projects that harm both people and the environment. The talk offers a Global South perspective on what happens when competing visions of progress and the good life collide and provides a template for understanding other polarizing, intractable local and international moral issues. Dr. Maldonado holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of Florida and has been a professor, researcher, and administrator charged with connecting University research with poorer communities at the Universidad Católica, the Jesuit university in Córdoba, Argentina. He co-directed and taught in the LMU Casa de la Matteada Study Abroad program in Cordoba from 2011-2017. The program will be moderated by Brian Treanor, President’s Professor in Philosophy and is sponsored by the Casassa Chair in Psychology, the President’s Professor in Philosophy, Bioethics, and Psychology.
