LANGUAGE, IDENTIY AND JUSTICE: Confronting linguistic intolerance in the USA The future of immigrants who cross many political, economic, racial, and linguistic fronteras to arrive, survive, and thrive-- and that of their children and grandchildren-- is impeded by multiple barriers, beyond concrete walls at the border and unjust detentions. Demands for English-only and increased linguistic intolerance seriously affect the families of speakers of Spanish and many other languages. Major barreras include the demonization of languages other than English by many-- including political leaders--, restrictive employment policies, and limited educational programs. Monolingual English speakers are not the only promoters of intolerance; some members of the disparaged communities also act like LA MIGRA BILINGUE, patrolling language borders. Spanglish, Taglish, Chinglish and other forms of code switching are widely misunderstood and maligned. These negative attitudes contribute to the loss of bilingual fluency, and to identity conflicts. This talk will develop a vision for how we can ensure un futuro bilingue with our teaching, research, and community outreach. I will discuss ongoing efforts from my own work and those of my colleagues that aim to build a safer and more tolerant environment for the future of bilingualism in the US.
