EHS Candidate Visit | Dr. Jagadeesh Puvvula: Presentation and Q&A "Life-Course Exposure to Environmental Hazards and Adverse Neurodevelopmental Outcomes" Dr. Jagadeesh Puvvula is an environmental epidemiologist who evaluates mechanistic associations between life-course environmental exposures and birth/neurodevelopmental outcomes. He primarily works on exposures to endocrine-disrupting chemical mixtures, notably phthalates, polybrominated diphenyl ethers, and organophosphate esters. At FIU – EHS, he envisions building a research program focused on the environmental exposome and precision environmental health.In his presentation, Dr. Puvvula will discuss his research on environmental exposures and early-life outcomes. His work spans a broad range of environmental exposures, from satellite-derived air pollutants to environmental chemical biomarkers. These exposures include air pollutants (PAHs and toxic metals), forever chemicals (PFAS), flame retardants (PBDEs and OPEs), industrial chemicals (PCBs), chemicals found in consumer products (phthalates, phenols, and parabens), and pesticides (organochlorines and organophosphates). He uses biological intermediates—including the epigenome, transcriptome, proteome, metabolome, and imaging markers—to investigate the biological mechanisms underlying exposure-response associations. He is also expanding his research to incorporate single-nucleus approaches to better understand these mechanisms at the cellular level. Dr. Puvvula envisions FIU-EHS as an ideal environment in which to build an independent, extramurally funded research program integrating the external exposome, chemical biomarkers, and multi-omic intermediates within a precision environmental health framework, while fostering collaborations across epidemiology, biostatistics, and molecular biology.
