The Wertheim’s 30th anniversary season opens with a celebration of Ernesto Lecuona (1895–1963). of Cuba’s most iconic composers, as the FIU Symphony Orchestra presents a special concert honoring his enduring musical legacy. The program features pianist and Lecuona scholar Tomás Tirino, one of today’s leading interpreters of Lecuona’s music, with internationally recognized Cuban soprano and FIU alumna Laura León as featured guest artist. Tirino has played a major role in bringing Lecuona’s piano works back to international attention, drawing on decades of research into rare manuscripts, historic recordings, piano rolls, and the composer’s own performance style. Endorsed by members of the Lecuona estate, he brings exceptional authority and insight to this opening-night program. Conducted by Dr. Javier José Mendoza, the concert brings Lecuona’s unmistakable voice to the symphonic stage, with FIU students performing alongside distinguished guest artists and alumni. The evening also continues FIU’s connection to Lecuona’s legacy, following the 2021 orchestral world premiere of Rumba-Rhapsody.
