Join Goucher alumnus and author Earl Swift for a conversation inspired by his latest book, Up on Cove Mountain: Adventure, Tragedy, and a Quest for Meaning on the Appalachian Trail. More than three decades after completing his first end-to-end hike of the Appalachian Trail, Swift returned to take on its 2,200 miles once again. But his journey was about more than retracing familiar ground. It also brought him back to the memories of a tragedy that marked his first hike, a murder on the trail, and to questions about risk, loss, and meaning that had remained with him in the decades since. Through stories from both journeys, Swift will reflect on the adventure and uncertainty of life on the trail, the lasting impact of tragedy, and what it means to revisit a formative experience with the perspective that comes from age and time. The conversation will explore how memory changes, how we make sense of events that stay with us, and what returning to the places of our past can reveal about who we have become.
