Camila de Ilhéus Celebrates the Release of Her First Photobook, SAUDADE, at Goucher Art Galleries Goucher Art Galleries will host the Baltimore release and signing of SAUDADE, the first photobook by photographer Camila de Ilhéus, on Saturday, September 12, from 3–6 p.m. in the Silber Art Gallery. The Baltimore event marks the first of an international series of releases for the publication, with subsequent events planned for Los Angeles and São Paulo, Brazil. At the heart of the book is a word that resists translation. Saudade describes a particular kind of longing: the love that remains in the presence of absence, the ache for something that has passed, or even the yearning for something that has not yet happened and may never exist. Neither quite grief nor nostalgia, saudade occupies the uncertain space between memory, desire, distance, and love. This emotional terrain forms the foundation of Camila’s photographs. Through images shaped by family, place, intimacy, and the passage of time, SAUDADE considers photography as both an act of preservation and an acknowledgment of change. Photographs hold onto people, places, and moments while simultaneously reminding us that they cannot remain as they were. The publication grew out of conversations surrounding Camila’s first solo exhibition, when curator and editor Liz Faust proposed that the body of work take the form of a book. What began as an unexpected possibility developed into an international collaboration spanning Baltimore, New York, and Brazil. The September 12 gathering at Goucher College will offer visitors an opportunity to encounter the publication, meet the artist, and have copies signed. The event also celebrates the network of artists, designers, editors, printers, technicians, friends, and family whose work made the publication possible. For Camila, that network begins with family. As she writes in acknowledging those closest to her: “E mais importante, a minha família, MUITO OBRIGADA; eu amo vocês mais do que palavras conseguem descrever. Isso aqui não existe sem vocês.” — “And most importantly, my family, THANK YOU SO MUCH; I love you more than words can describe. None of this exists without you.” EVENT DETAILS Camila de Ilhéus: SAUDADE — Photobook Release & Signing Saturday, September 12, 2026 | 3–6 p.m. Silber Art Gallery Goucher College 1021 Dulaney Valley Road Towson, Maryland 21204 The event is free and open to the public.
