CETLOE is excited to announce our first-ever Open Classrooms Week this fall, Oct. 5-9. We're inviting faculty to open their doors and welcome one to two colleagues to catch a glimpse of teaching in action. This isn't an evaluation or a formal observation; it's a community-building exchange designed to spark conversation and showcase the diverse teaching talent across our university. Course: Critical Thinking Session Description: This class session introduces students to Charles Sanders Peirce’s article The Fixation of Belief and focuses on how people form and maintain their beliefs. The learning objective is to help students understand Peirce’s view of human psychology in terms of doubt and belief and to examine the different methods people use to “fix” their beliefs. The session will begin with a brief overview of the article and its place in Peirce’s series on critical thinking, followed by a discussion of his account of belief as a stable state and doubt as an uncomfortable state that motivates inquiry. Students will then explore Peirce’s four methods of fixing belief, with particular attention to the methods of tenacity and authority. During the class, students will also participate in a short belief inventory activity in which they reflect on how they formed some of their own beliefs about controversial issues such as capital punishment or government secrecy, which will provide a concrete way to connect Peirce’s theory to their own reasoning practice Note: To ensure that we do not fill a classroom, the room number will be provided after registration via email
